Strategy, tactics, and day-to-day operations are three key concepts that are closely interrelated and play an essential role in the success of any organisation. Here is how they play together:

Strategy is about setting overall goals and directions for the organisation in the long term. It involves identifying opportunities and threats in the market, defining competitive advantages, and choosing the best ways to achieve the goals. Strategic planning usually considers long-term challenges and opportunities, and it is often the responsibility of management to formulate the strategy.

Tactics are actions and decisions taken to implement the overall strategy. This activity involves making more concrete and tactical decisions on achieving strategic goals. The tactics are often more focused on the medium term and may include specific plans, resource allocation and activities to achieve strategic goals.

Day-to-day operation refers to the routine operations and activities necessary to maintain the organisation’s daily operations. Day-to-day operations can include managing employees, handling customer service, maintaining IT systems, executing production processes, etc. Day-to-day operations often focus on short-term tasks and ongoing activities to ensure efficiency and productivity.

The connection between these three concepts is crucial to the success of the organisation:

  • The strategy provides direction and lays the foundation and provides direction for the organisation by defining long-term goals and priorities.
  • The tactic implements the strategy and is a way to operationalise the strategy by translating overall goals into concrete actions and plans. They decide how the organisation will achieve its strategic goals.
  • Daily operations must support the tactic choices by providing the necessary infrastructure and resources to execute the tactic. It ensures that the organisation functions effectively and continuously supports the planned tactics to achieve the strategic goals.

An effective integration of strategy, tactics, and day-to-day operations is critical to ensuring that the organisation is moving in the right direction, implementing plans effectively, and maintaining day-to-day operational success.
